There will be a soulful and moving closing to this year’s festival on August 20th. Billie is a documentary about the legendary Billie Holiday, one of the world’s greatest and most legendary jazz singers – and the contrasts in her short, turbulent life.
This film is told through one of her biggest fans, Linda Lipnack Kuehl, who in 1971 began working on a comprehensive biography on Holiday. Over a period of eight years, she did over 200 hours of interviews with those who knew her best – Charles Mingus, Tony Bennett, Sylvia Syms and Count Basie among others. Kuehl’s book was never finished, but this documentary is based on these recordings. No one has heard them until now. You will also see newly restored concert recordings, which will be shown in color for the very first time.
