Thelma has just moved away from her religious family in West Norway to become a student in Oslo, when she is suddenly struck by a powerful seizure in the reading hall, an incident she keeps from her parents. At the same time she meets Anja, a fellow student, and they are drawn to each other in mysterious fashion. Thelma is overwhelmed by emotions she does not dare acknowledge, the seizures come more often and are more dangerous, and the doctors have no explanation. Frightening and supernatural powers are forcing themselves into the open, and one day Anja disappears without a trace.

Thelma is a supernatural romantic thriller from Joachim Trier, one of Norway’s most internationally renowned directors. Trier won the Amanda Awards for Best Screenplay and Best Director with his debut film Reprise, and his next film Oslo August 31st was chosen for the Un Certain Regard programme in Cannes. He also won the Amanda Award again for Best Director. His third film Louder Than Bombs was a star-studded English-language drama that ensured that Trier became the first Norwegian director in the Cannes main programme since Anja Breien in 1979.
