The Gravedigger’s Wife

Screenwriter and director Khadar Ahmed, born in Somalia but living in Finland, gives us a film that takes place in Djibouti, Africa. Guled and Nasra live outside the capital with their son Mahad. Guled works as a gravedigger, so he literally waits for people to die to work. However, they are facing difficult times: Nasra needs expensive surgery to treat a chronic kidney disease. How will they find the money to save Nasra? The Gravedigger’s Wife gives us a beautiful and well-played family relationship and explains how money is the catalyst between life and death. The work is also beautifully photographed by Arttu Peltomaa, with soft yellow tones in this warm and sunny landscape.
