Next of Kin

Next of Kin (Arven) is perhaps Anja Breien’s very best film, and a landmark in Norwegian film history. It was Norway’s very first participation in the main competition in Cannes, an honor that was reserved for Anja Breien and Next of Kin all alone, until Joachim Trier’s Louder Than Bombs was selected in 2015.

The film is about the Skaug family. They are gathered for a grand funeral of shipowner and businessman Kai Skaug. He has just been abruptly died and leaves behind a huge fortune. As a shipowner and a widower without children, the grieving family members now see an opportunity to cash in. It turns out that the inheritance will go to the Skaug family exactly as they hope, but on one condition. The family must continue to run the shipping company and they must be united. Otherwise, the entire inheritance disappears. This leads to complications and tragedies in the Skaug family. For things do not go quite according to plan.
