The Painter and the Thief

In Benjamin Rees’s captivating documentary, a painter meets the thief who stole her art – and ends up painting him. The result is a unique film, about a very special friendship, and with plot twists that exceed the imagination. As the director himself states: “I was interested in art theft – and art thieves – and then I suddenly discovered this case about the theft of two paintings from Gallery Nobel in Oslo. I immediately began filming the interaction between artist Barbora and thief Karl-Bertil, from the fourth time they met. It was planned as a short documentary, but then so much happened, so unexpectedly and so interestingly, that I kept filming – and I had no idea what was going to happen during the project. ”

The Painter and the Thief won an award in Sundance earlier this year, and have already attracted great and enthusiastic attention in the American press. Benjamin Rees’s previous film, Magnus, about Magnus Carlsen was shown at the 2016 film festival, and became a worldwide success.

There will be a visit from the director before the screenings Sunday August 16 and Monday August 17.
