The Painter and the Thief

In Benjamin Ree’s critically acclaimed documentary, a painter meets the thief who stole her art – and ends up painting him. The result has been a unique film, about a very special friendship, and with plot twists that surpass the imagination. As the director himself states: “I was interested in art thefts – and art thieves – and then suddenly this case of the theft of two paintings from Galleri Nobel in Oslo appeared. I immediately started filming the interaction between the artist Barbora and the thief Karl-Bertil, from the fourth time they met. It started with being a short documentary, but then so much happened, so unexpected and so interesting, that I continued to film – and I had no idea that it would happen during the project.
