Christmas is approaching in Iceland, and a remarkable atmosphere is setting over the country. An abandoned farm is on fire, a children’s choir is singing Christmas carols, a museum worker is arguing on the phone, a young girl is getting her mum to try on VR glasses. In 56 scenes from Iceland during Advent, Rúnar Rúnarsson paints a bittersweet picture of a modern society. The scenes are sorted chronologically from mid-December to the start of the new year, and apparently have nothing in common but the fact that they take place in Iceland. With such a limited starting point, one can imagine a monotonous and boring film, but the breadth of the stories that are told and the people we meet create a touching and fun kaleidoscope of moments from the saga island.
