Clara Sola

The debut film by the half-Swedish / half-Costa Rican Nathalie Álvarez takes us to a remote village in Costa Rica. Here we meet Clara, an introverted woman in her forties, who lives with her deeply religious mother and her niece, who is in her teens. Clara is also a virgin and is more comfortable being near her white mare Yuca, than with men. In the film, she is like an allegory to the Virgin Mary. Clara gets a sexual and mysterious awakening when she embarks on a journey to free herself from the religious and social conventions that have ruled her life until now. Clara Sola is a symbolic work of art – straight from Cannes 2021 – with magical realism and lyrical atmosphere.
